One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab - Mrs Hemsley

For today’s task I would like you to look at the video of me reading One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab.

(I read it to you on Zoom last week.)

I would like you to make some numbers for me using the creatures in the story………but I would like you to do it a particular way. (You can choose the numbers.)

Can you first start with crabs. How many crabs (lots of 10) would there be in your number?

If the number is 22 there would be 2 crabs so you would write 10 + 10 …….. then how many of the other creatures would you need to make the 2? I’m going to use a person (2 feet) but I could have used 2 snails.

Can you set out your answer like this so your grown up can see the number in digits, the number in words, the number in creatures and the number as a number sentence.

Don’t forget that the = can go at the front of the number sentence and at the end!

You can use this print out to help you or draw the creatures yourself.

Year 2, as an extra challenge I would like you to use 'lots of' or multiply (x) in your number sentences.

Like this.

As an extra, extra challenge you could see if you could make your numbers in lots of different ways.
